There are a number of pathways you can choose at The College of Animal Welfare, these are: <strong>Animal Interaction & Handling</strong> Typical job roles of those undertaking this apprenticeship include Dog Day Care Assistants, Animal Welfare Assistant and Farm Park Assistants. You will learn about correct handling and interaction methods to ensure the physical and emotional welfare of animals are promoted at all times. <strong>Rehoming</strong> Typical job roles of those undertaking this apprenticeship include Animal Welfare Assistants, Zoo Keeper Assistants and those working in animal rescue centres. You will learn about the intake, assessment, matching and rehoming of animals. <strong>Movement and Transportation </strong>Typical job roles of those undertaking this apprenticeship include Animal Collection Officers, Animal Ambulance Drivers and Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistants. You will look at the legal requirements for moving animals, ensuring that the animal's welfare is maintained at all times. <strong>Breeding </strong>Typical job roles of those undertaking this apprenticeship include Animal Welfare Assistants working in breeding centres. You will look at the whole breeding process; from mating and parturition, to caring for neonates and the physical and social development of the young. <strong>Working Dog Handler</strong> Typical job roles of those undertaking this apprenticeship include Animal Handlers, Security Dog Handlers and Service Dog Handlers. You will look at the legal and ethical frameworks to ensure the dog team operate within them. <strong>Operational/Reception Duties</strong> Typical job roles of those undertaking this apprenticeship include Pet Retail Shop Assistants, Kennel/Cattery Assistants and Animal Day Care Assistants. You will look at customer service, processing of sales, management of stock and record keeping. <strong>Wildlife Rehabilitation</strong> Typical job roles of those undertaking this apprenticeship include Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistants, Zoo Keeper Assistants and Farm Park Assistants. You will learn about the collection, movement, care, release and monitoring of healthy and injured wild animals. <span style="text-decoration: underline"><strong>Functional Skills</strong></span> Apprentices under 19 years of age will be required to undertake Functional Skills Level 1 and/or 2 in English and Maths unless exempt. <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline">Off-The-Job Training Hours</span> </strong>You will undertake a minimum of six hours a week of off-the-job training hours, this is learning that takes place during your normal working hours. The EPA consists of: <ol> <li><strong>Practical Assessment</strong>: An observation of the apprentice by an independent assessor completing two practical tasks.</li> <li><strong>Professional Discussion:</strong> A structured discussion between the apprentice and the independent assessor, made up of a portfolio review and 10 competency-based questions to establish an applied level of knowledge, skills and behaviour.</li> </ol> Your performance in the EPA will determine the apprenticeship grade of fail, pass or distinction.

However, you will need to be living and working in England within an animal care environment (such as a boarding kennels, cattery, rescue centre) and earning at least the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates">National Minimum Wage for Apprentices</a>. <strong>International qualifications </strong>Students with foreign qualifications are required to have their certificates translated using a UK ENIC Statement to confirm if they have previously achieved Level 2 English and Level 2 maths for their apprenticeship. If a student has not previously achieved this, they will need to complete Functional Skills English and/or maths as part of their apprenticeship. Details > 4 > Body: Apprenticeship course fees are payable by the employer. Fees are dependent upon the size of the organisation you are employed in. <strong>Course fees for Growth and Skills (Apprenticeship) Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million) These employers will pay the full apprenticeship amount of £5,000 using their digital account. <strong>Course fees for Non-Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of less than £3 million) These employers will pay 5% (£250 in one payment) towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. <em>Please note that apprenticeship fees are fully funded (free) for those aged 16-24 years, working in a non-levy paying organisation.</em> These are current figures and may be subject to change. The differences in course fees reflect the level of funding that is available as a result of government policies and priorities. By the end of the programme, you will have developed the confidence, practical experience and professional skills employers are looking for in modern animal care settings. You can progress directly into roles within kennels and catteries, rescue and rehoming centres, doggy day care facilities, pet retail, farm parks, wildlife rehabilitation organisations and animal welfare charities, for example. Many apprentices continue building their careers by taking on greater responsibility within their workplace, supervising junior staff, supporting animal training and enrichment programmes, or becoming key members of animal welfare and care teams. Details > 0 > Body: You will study the following units: <strong>Unit 201 – Maintain animal health and welfare </strong>On completion of this unit, you will be able to maintain and promote the health and welfare of a range of animals. You will be able to identify any signs of ill health or impending problems and know how to support and monitor an animals’ recovery. <strong>Unit 202 – Undertake practical animal feeding </strong>During this unit you will learn how to recognise, prepare and select appropriate feeding equipment and foodstuffs needed to keep animals at their optimum nutritional state, including the feeding requirements of animals during different life stages. <strong>Unit 203 – Maintain animal accommodation </strong>This unit looks at the design, construction and maintenance of animal accommodation. On completion you will know how to source accommodation which meets the welfare and safety needs of a range of species, and understand the cleaning and preparation requirements for a variety of animal housing. <strong>Unit 204 – Undertake work related experience </strong>As part of the qualification you will be required to undertake at least 150 hours of work experience in the animal industry; this could be gained through voluntary work or paid employment. This practical experience will increase your confidence and give you the opportunity to apply your new knowledge and skills in the working environment. <strong>Unit 205 – Understand the principles of animal biology </strong>During this unit you will gain an understanding of how the animal body works. You will look at the structure and function of cells and the different body systems. You will also learn how animals are grouped and named and look at the principles of reproduction and heredity. <strong>Unit 206 – Principles and practices of animal behaviour and handling </strong>You will look at the principles of animal behaviour and handling, and how these can be applied in practise. You will be able to identify normal and abnormal behaviour and learn the skills and knowledge to approach animals based on their displayed behaviour to minimise risk and stress. <strong>Unit 210 – Introduction to animal breeds and grooming </strong>At the end of this unit you will gain an understanding of the concepts of animal evolution and domestication, and be able to identify commonly kept breeds of dogs, cats and other pet species. You will also learn how and why we carry out practical small animal grooming.

You should either be employed, or have a voluntary work placement arranged, in a suitable animal care environment for at least 4 hours per week. The placement should have a person who has at least two years of animal care experience, or who has a relevant level 2 or above qualification, to be your mentor. You will need access to at least three animal species as part of your practical assessment; this must include companion dogs and cats and then either small animals (rabbits or rodents) or exotics or large mammals (goats, camelids, donkeys, pigs or other available large mammals). You are able to have more than one work placement during the course to gain this experience. <em>* Please note that work placements in wildlife hospitals or rescue centres dealing solely with wild animals are not advisable. Once you have completed your formal training and gained solid industry experience, many opportunities become available to you. The EPA consists of: <ul> <li><strong>Observation with questions:</strong> An observation with questions involves an independent assessor observing you undertaking work as part of their normal duties in your workplace and asking questions.</li> <li><strong>Interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence:</strong>An interview consists of an independent assessor asking you a series of questions to assess your competence. The assessors will conduct and assess the interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.</li> <li><strong>Knowledge test:</strong>A test will consist of a series of multiple choice questions in which you will be asked to provide a response.</li> </ul> Your performance in the EPA will determine the apprenticeship grade of fail, pass or distinction.

If you are not already working in a dog grooming salon, you may wish to look at undertaking the <a href="https://www.caw.ac.uk/course/level-2-certificate-for-dog-grooming-assistants/">City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants</a> programme which is held at our Huntingdon and Leeds centres. All applicants are invited to attend a pre course discussion after application where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your suitability for the programme. <strong>Please note:</strong> As our courses include online learning components, students are required to have access to a PC or laptop with a reliable internet connection.

Details > 4 > Body: Apprenticeship course fees are payable by the employer. Fees are dependent upon the size of the organisation you are employed in. <strong>Course fees for Growth and Skills (Apprenticeship) Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million) These employers will pay the full apprenticeship amount of £5,000 using their digital account. <strong>Course fees for Non-Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of less than £3 million) These employers will pay 5% (£250 in one payment) towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. <em>Please note that apprenticeship fees are fully funded (free) for those aged 16-24 years, working in a non-levy paying organisation.</em> <strong>General Advice</strong> These are current figures and may be subject to change. The differences in course fees reflect the level of funding that is available as a result of government policies and priorities. Details > 0 > Body: You will gain the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours needed of an equine groom to ensure you maintain safe working practices and take responsibility for yourself, others and the horses in your care. <strong>Knowledge and Skills </strong>You will gain a comprehensive understanding of a wide range of knowledge and skills including: <ul> <li>Safe Working Practices</li> <li>Yard and Field Routines and Duties</li> <li>Horse Anatomy, Physiology and Welfare</li> <li>Horse Handling, Care and Appearance</li> <li>Saddlery and Equipment</li> <li>Travelling Horses</li> <li>Non-Ridden Exercise</li> </ul> <strong>Behaviours </strong>You will look at safe working, work ethic, responsibility, team work and communication. <h3><strong>Pathways</strong></h3> There are five specialised routes you can choose from, each of which have specific knowledge and skills associated. <strong>Breeding </strong>This includes study of the principles of equine reproduction, importance of teasing, monitoring of pregnancy, disease awareness and preparation of equines for sale. <strong>Driving </strong>You will understand all parts of a single set of harness, correct usage with two and four wheeled vehicles with independent shafts and exercise techniques in a non-driving environment. <strong>Racing </strong>You will select to follow either the Racing Exercise Groom or the Racing Yard Based Groom pathways and learn areas such as specific exercise regimes, regulatory requirements and fitting specialist racing equipment and tack. <strong>Riding </strong>Specific skills and knowledge will cover areas such as the correct riding position, use of pole work, riding in a group and on the road and public places. <strong>Non-Riding </strong>Knowledge and skills will be gained in areas such as stock rotation, supply storage, yard based records, customer care and the benefits and practice of lunging. <h3><strong>Functional Skills</strong></h3> If you are an apprentice under 19 years of age you will be required to undertake Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 in English and Maths unless exempt. <h3><strong>Off-The-Job Training Hours</strong></h3> You will undertake a minimum of six hours a week of off-the-job training hours, this is learning that takes place during your normal working hours. Faq > 0 > Body: Yes. In order to undertake this apprenticeship, you must be living and working in England in a suitable equine organisation, such as a riding school, horse charity or racing yard.

Faq > 1 > Title: What are off-the-job training hours?

Faq > 1 > Body: Off-the-job (OTJ) training hours are mandatory, paid learning hours for apprentices that take place during normal working hours to help them to gain new skills and knowledge outside of their normal daily work duties. This could be working through online course materials, undertaking webinars, time spent on your portfolio etc. Each apprentice has to undertake a minimum of six OTJ hours per week (this may be pro-rata for part-time employees).

Once on the register, you will be able to call yourself a Registered Veterinary Nurse and use letters RVN after your name. <strong>Progression and employment prospects in veterinary nursing </strong>As a result of a high demand for registered veterinary nurses across the country, job prospects are excellent both within veterinary practice and in other related areas. Salary prospects have improved significantly in recent years, the median salary package for qualified veterinary nurses is now £30,500 (SPVS Salaries Survey 2022/3). There are many opportunities for graduate veterinary nurses, from working in first opinion veterinary practice to moving into more specialist areas, such as surgical nursing in a referral practice or large veterinary hospital.
