The EPA consists of: <ol> <li><strong>Practical Assessment</strong>: An observation of the apprentice by an independent assessor completing two practical tasks.</li> <li><strong>Professional Discussion:</strong> A structured discussion between the apprentice and the independent assessor, made up of a portfolio review and 10 competency-based questions to establish an applied level of knowledge, skills and behaviour.</li> </ol> Your performance in the EPA will determine the apprenticeship grade of fail, pass or distinction.

However, you will need to be living and working in England within an animal care environment (such as a boarding kennels, cattery, rescue centre) and earning at least the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates">National Minimum Wage for Apprentices</a>. To complete this apprenticeship within the anticipated timeframe you will need to be working for a minimum of 30 hours per week, if you are working less than 30 hours a week the length of your apprenticeship will be extended depending on your working hours. <strong>International qualifications </strong>Students with foreign qualifications are required to have their certificates translated using a UK ENIC Statement to confirm if they have previously achieved Level 2 English and Level 2 maths for their apprenticeship. Details > 4 > Body: Apprenticeship course fees are payable by the employer. Fees are dependent upon the size of the organisation you are employed in. <strong>Course fees for Growth and Skills (Apprenticeship) Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million) These employers will pay the full apprenticeship amount of £5,000 using their digital account. <strong>Course fees for Non-Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of less than £3 million) These employers will pay 5% (£250 in one payment) towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. <em>Please note that apprenticeship fees are fully funded (free) for those aged 16-24 years, working in a non-levy paying organisation.</em> These are current figures and may be subject to change. The differences in course fees reflect the level of funding that is available as a result of government policies and priorities. By the end of the programme, you will have developed the confidence, practical experience and professional skills employers are looking for in modern animal care settings. You can progress directly into roles within kennels and catteries, rescue and rehoming centres, doggy day care facilities, pet retail, farm parks, wildlife rehabilitation organisations and animal welfare charities, for example. Many apprentices continue building their careers by taking on greater responsibility within their workplace, supervising junior staff, supporting animal training and enrichment programmes, or becoming key members of animal welfare and care teams. If you want to continue studying, you can progress onto higher-level qualifications such as the <a href="https://www.caw.ac.uk/course/animal-care-and-welfare-manager-level-3-apprenticeship/">Level 3 Animal Care and Welfare Manager Apprenticeship</a>. Details > 5 > Body: <strong>Registering as a newly qualified registered veterinary nurse (RVN) </strong>On completion of the Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing, you will be eligible to apply to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses. Once on the register, you will be able to call yourself a Registered Veterinary Nurse and use letters RVN after your name. <strong>Progression and employment prospects in veterinary nursing </strong>As a result of a high demand for registered veterinary nurses across the country, job prospects are excellent both within veterinary practice and in other related areas. Salary prospects have improved significantly in recent years, the median salary package for qualified veterinary nurses is now £30,500 (SPVS Salaries Survey 2022/3). There are many opportunities for graduate veterinary nurses, from working in first opinion veterinary practice to moving into more specialist areas, such as surgical nursing in a referral practice or large veterinary hospital. However, you will need to be living and working in England within a clinical role in a veterinary environment* and earning at least the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices. To complete this apprenticeship within the anticipated timeframe you will need to be working for a minimum of 30 hours per week, if you are working less than 30 hours a week the length of your apprenticeship will be extended depending on your working hours. <em>* Please note the veterinary practice <strong>does not</strong> need to be a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ (RCVS) approved Training and Assessment Practice (TP or aTP).</em> <strong>International qualifications </strong>Students with foreign qualifications are required to have their certificates translated using a UK ENIC Statement to confirm if they have previously achieved Level 2 English and Level 2 maths for their apprenticeship. Details > 4 > Body: Apprenticeship course fees are payable by the employer. Fees are dependent upon the size of the organisation you are employed in. <strong>Course fees for Growth and Skills (Apprenticeship) Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million) These employers will pay the full apprenticeship amount of £5,000 using their digital account. <strong>Course fees for Non-Levy Paying Employers</strong> (organisations with an annual pay bill of less than £3 million) These employers will pay 5% (£250 in one payment) towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. <em>Please note that apprenticeship fees are fully funded (free) for those aged 16-24 years, working in a non-levy paying organisation.</em> These are current figures and may be subject to change. The differences in course fees reflect the level of funding that is available as a result of government policies and priorities. The OSCE preparation software will help you to prepare for your OSCEs (practical exams) by creating muscle memory and alleviating exam anxiety. You can practise the OSCE tasks that you may come across in your real exam, such as taking x rays, packaging samples and identifying parasites. Our anatomy software allows you to explore and learn body systems in details. Faq > 0 > Title: Do I need to be employed in a veterinary practice to start this course?

Faq > 0 > Body: Yes you will need to be employed in either an equine, or mixed (equine and companion animal), practice and have the full support of your employer.

Faq > 1 > Title: If I complete this qualification, will I be a registered veterinary nurse?

Faq > 1 > Body: Yes, successful completion of this qualification, along with at least 1,800 hours of employment or work placement in an RCVS approved veterinary training practice, will allow you to apply to join the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ (RCVS) Register of Veterinary Nurses as an Equine Veterinary Nurse.

Faq > 2 > Title: I am employed in an equine veterinary practice but it is not a TP, can I still apply?

Faq > 2 > Body: No, unfortunately the veterinary practice you are working in must be an RCVS approved Training Practice (TP/aTP). However, we offer a full Training Practice approval service so we can work with your practice to help them become a TP/aTP if they wish to become one.

Faq > 3 > Title: How do I find a paid job as a student veterinary nurse?

Faq > 3 > Body: <ul> <li><strong>Get a foot in the door</strong> – many people secure a student veterinary nurse position as they are known to the practice. This could be via work experience, or a change of role from a veterinary receptionist or care assistant, for example.</li> <li><strong>Online jobs boards</strong> – Keep an eye out on job boards such as the <a href="https://blog.caw.ac.uk/index.php/jobs/">CAW jobs board</a>, <a href="https://blog.caw.ac.uk/index.php/jobs/">Vet Times Jobs</a>, <a href="https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship">National Apprenticeship Service</a> or more generic ones such as Indeed. The College of Animal Welfare also has an <a href="https://www.caw.ac.uk/apprenticeship-vacancies/">Apprenticeship Vacancy page</a> where you can sign up for new apprenticeship job alerts.</li> <li><strong>Contact veterinary practices directly</strong> – Introduce yourself, leave your CV and show them how much you would really like an opportunity to train. You can use it as an opportunity to try to gain some work experience too.</li> </ul>

Faq > 4 > Title: I don’t have level 2 English or Maths qualification, can I do them alongside the qualification?

Faq > 4 > Body: Level 2 English and Maths are required to enrol with the RCVS as a student veterinary nurse so unfortunately you will need to have these before you begin the course. We do run online Functional Skills Maths and English courses that take around six months to complete.

Details > 0 > Body: Over the course of the qualification, you will cover the following units: <ol> <li><strong>Assisting with the supply of veterinary products</strong> You will look at ordering and receiving veterinary medicinal products, and communicating with clients on veterinary products, retail products, veterinary therapies and know when to refer clients for veterinary diagnosis and advice.</li> <li><strong>Maintenance of a veterinary reception area </strong>During this unit you will look at managing and maintaining the reception desk and waiting area, interpreting basic animal behaviour and supporting clients who are facing the death of an animal.</li> <li><strong>Principles and practice of veterinary reception </strong>You will look at communicating effectively with clients and colleagues, including making appointments and advising clients of available veterinary services. You will also look at accurately maintaining client, and other business-related, records and processing fees for services.</li> <li><strong>Working safely in a veterinary practice </strong>During this unit you will look at the hazards and risks in a veterinary practice; understanding the organisational and legal requirements for Health and Safety and be able to act upon hazards in the veterinary practice setting.</li> <li><strong>Essentials of veterinary terminology</strong> Gain a greater understanding of the structure and meaning of medicinal word parts, and know the meaning of terminology relating to animal form and function, and veterinary clinical practice.</li> </ol>

Details > 1 > Body: You will complete an online portfolio and undertake a short, multiple-choice question, examination. The examination can either be undertaken at our Huntingdon, North London or Leeds centre, or via remote invigilation from your home/place of work.
