Course Overview
Awarded by City & Guilds, this qualification is ideal if you are working in the equine industry in a position of responsibility, such as head groom, and are looking for a more advanced level of qualification to reflect your experience and knowledge.
This work-based/distance learning programme will not require you to come into College. Your assessor will visit you in your place of work three times throughout your qualification.
Your course materials will be provided by your assessor; the knowledge you will gain from undertaking this qualification, alongside the practical experience you will be accumulating through employment or work experience, will enable you to do your job more effectively and boost your career prospects.
Key Facts
Attendance: You will not be required to attend College. All tuition, support and assessment will be provided in the workplace, online and via email and telephone contact. You will be supported by one of the College’s work-based learning assessors and will be mentored by your employer/supervisor in the workplace.
Duration: 18 months
Start Date: You may start this programme at any time during the year.
Location: As this qualification is work-based no college attendance is required. Your tuition will be provided online, and you will be supported by a personal tutor who will assess your work and provide feedback. Regular contact and support will be carried out by your tutor via email, telephone and Microsoft Teams. Your place of work should be located within a 90 minute radius of our Huntingdon centre; if it is outside of this area, please contact us as we may still be able to meet your training needs.
Course Content
You will complete the following mandatory units:
- Receive a Horse and Carry out an Initial Assessment
- Plan Diets and Implement Feeding Regimes for Horses
- Monitor and Maintain Stocks of Feed and Bedding
- Promote the Health and Well-being of Horses
- Deliver Basic Health Care Treatment to Horses
- Promote, Monitor and Maintain Health, Safety and Security of the Workplace
- Manage Your Own Resources
You will then choose from a range of optional units to complete the qualification, these will be discussed with you at induction, examples include:
- Introduce Young Horses to Equipment
- Exercise and Improve the Performance of Horses using Lunging or Long Reigning
- Care for Horses After Strenuous Exercise
- Prepare and Maintain Grazing Land for Horses
- Jump Schooled Horses to Maintain Training
Assessment
You will complete a portfolio and pass work-based practical assessments.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements. However you must be either employed, or volunteering in, a suitable horse care environment in a position of responsibility, such as head groom or yard manager, within a 90 minute radius of our Huntingdon centre. If your place of work is outside of this area, please contact us as we may still be able to meet your training needs.
Course Fees
Course fees can either be paid in full before the beginning of the course, on an annual basis, or via our ‘Pay As You Learn’ monthly payment scheme. A CAW Loans2Learn scheme is also available, details can be found below.
If you have not achieved your qualification by the planned end date detailed in your individual learning plan, you will be able to continue to receive support and access to your course by paying monthly direct debit payments until certification of your award.
