Overview

This qualification has been designed for learners who are looking to learn about the basics of animal anatomy and physiology. It will be particularly of interest to those looking to train as a veterinary nurse but have not achieved the required standard of science (GCSE at grades 4/C or above) needed for entry onto the programme.

Throughout the qualification, you will gain the knowledge required to appropriately use common anatomical and physiological terminology; identify animal cells and tissues; and recognise the structure and functions of body cavities and systems.

For those looking to go onto train as a veterinary nurse, this qualification will count as evidence of science competency if you wish to apply for the VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing programme.

Course details

What will you study?

You will undertake the following five units:

Basic Principles of Mammalian Anatomy and Physiology – you will learn the more commonly used anatomical and physiological terms, and gain an understanding of different mammalian body cells and tissue types.

The Mammalian Musculo-Skeletal Systems – you will look at the structure and functions of the mammalian skeletal system. You will learn how to identify key bones, muscles, tendon, ligaments and joints

The Mammalian Cardio-Respiratory Systems – this unit introduces the cardio-vascular, lymphatic and respiratory systems. You will look at the key structures that form each of these important systems, and how these key structures function to deliver oxygen and nutrients to body cells and tissues and remove waste products. You will also explore lymphatic structures that contribute to the mammalian body’s immune response.

The Mammalian Excretory Systems – you will look at the key structures within the liver, renal and digestive systems, and learn how these structures function to absorb or retain nutrients and metabolise or remove waste products.

Mammalian Reproduction – this unit introduces the male and female reproductive systems. You will understand about the key structures and reproductive hormones in each of these systems and understand how they contribute to the reproductive process.
