Being a part of this amazing programme provides the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas including; species conservation, species identification, wildlife legislation, communication skills and many more.

Grounded Bat Ambulance Drivers will be responsible for speaking to members of the public who have found grounded or injured bats. They will provide initial advice and instruction and arrange the collection of the bat. Ambulance Drivers will work with their local Bat Carers to get the bat to them, but will not be required to handle any bats. Ambulance Drivers may also be involved in bat releases.

To take up a role as Grounded Bat Ambulance Driver we require volunteers to become members of the Cambridgeshire Bat Group (£8 annually http://www.cambsbatgroup.org.uk/membership/) to ensure that they receive appropriate training, insurance cover and support.

If your voluntary role involves handling of bats you are required to maintain up-to-date rabies immunisation, the cost of which is covered by Public Health England. This is an option, but not a requirement, for Grounded Bat Ambulance Drivers.

Mileage expenses incurred in the delivery of your role as a Grounded Bat Ambulance Driver may be re-claimed from Cambridgeshire Bat Group.

What happens next?

If, having read this, you are keen to become a volunteer Grounded Bat Ambulance Driver, we will be running a half-day training session on Sunday 24th November 2019 near St Neots.
