Surgery Information / Job Description

Are you a second year student veterinary nurse currently working in a quiet practice and struggling to complete your college portfolio?
Or are you an experienced RVN currently working in a quiet practice where your skills are not being utilised?
Are you looking for a flexible rota of full or part time hours?
Would you love to work in a busy hospital practice where patient care is gold standard and colleague wellbeing is paramount?
Do you love case continuity and being able to nurse your patients from admit to discharge?
Are you looking to further your career and expand your knowledge in a practice with interesting cases?
Are you looking to utilise and increase your skills in a supportive practice that knows and appreciates the true value of a veterinary nurse?

If any of these statements are true for you then we are the practice for you!

Due to expansion we are currently looking for both experienced RVNs and 2nd year SVNs to join our Award-winning RCVS accredited hospital practice.

If you came to join our practice you would be working with our amazing team providing gold standard 24 hour care for our day and hospitalised patients with a variety of needs from post-op monitoring to intensive care cases; this really is your chance to be a part of an incredible team. We believe in allowing our nurses to do every aspect of a nurse’s role including monitoring anaesthetics, running our busy kennels and running nurse clinics. We really do believe that a happy team is a motivated and dedicated one, so we schedule our rota accordingly.

Northampton Vets4pets is an award-winning practice! Rated “Outstanding” in all six areas by RCVS for their Practice Standards Awards. We are very proud to have won SPVS Well-being Medium Practice of the Year 2019, and think that we can offer a great work/life balance to our colleagues. We have also recently won the Rose of Northamptonshire ‘Unsung Heroes’ Award for our response to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Being an 11 vet, 24 hour hospital practice the caseload is high and variable. Commonly performed surgeries are TPLO, fracture repairs, TECABO, perineal urethrostomies, BOAS, skin flaps, caesareans, and similar interesting cases to get involved in.

We are located just an hour from London and Birmingham and Milton Keynes is 30 minutes away by car.

Person Specification

Our nurses are responsible for assisting our vets with our day and in-patient care (something we take very seriously), taking & running diagnostic samples, placing IV Catheters, preparing patients for theatre for surgery, monitoring anaesthesia, calculating and administering patient medication, x-raying patients, running the occasional nurse clinic and assisting in delivering amazing client care.  Our caseload is extremely varied- you could be placing a feeding tube one minute and scrubbed into a fracture repair the next.
As a 24 hour hospital we not only provide out of hours care for our own patients, but we also cover 11 other Vets4Pets practices in the area so our days can be busy but extremely varied and rewarding. We also work closely with the RSPCA and other local charities. We have built exceptionally strong and trusted relationships with our clients and we are looking for an RVN who enjoys this side of the role just as much as the clinical responsibilities.
The rota will include weekends and out of hours cover which gives you great exposure to emergencies and other interesting case.

 Our offer to you:
*Pastoral care, emotional wellbeing and support, 3 mental health first aiders on-site
*Free access to the RetailHub wellbeing service including access to professional support and counselling
*Birthday leave- no-one should have to work on their birthday!
*Volunteer days paid- paid days off for you to volunteer for your chosen charity
*Free gym membership (when they’re open!)
*Free onsite car parking
*Pension scheme
*Exclusive colleague discounts
*Discounted pet care
*Death in service- 4 times your annual salary
*Paid memberships – RCVS, VDS

By joining this lovely team you will be working alongside 11 vets, 11 RVNs, 3 SVNs, 7 receptionists, a client service manager, practice manager and 4 VCAs. The vet JVP is a certificate holder in general practice with 20 years’ experience, and we have three vets who are advanced practitioners and another two vets working towards their certificates. We hold regular clinical meetings, discuss protocols and run an open and honest culture encouraging development, change and support for our colleagues.

Above all else, we value someone who is a team player; committed to our patients and clients; and is keen to be a part of our fantastic team!
