Course Overview

Awarded by City & Guilds, this qualification is ideal if you are looking for a qualification in horse care where the emphasis is on gaining practical experience with the underpinning knowledge to support this.

This work-based/distance learning programme will not require you to come into College. Your assessor will visit you in your place of work three times throughout your qualification.

Your course materials will be provided by your assessor; the knowledge you will gain from undertaking this qualification, alongside the practical experience you will be accumulating through employment or work experience, will enable you to do your job more effectively and boost your career prospects.

Key Facts

Attendance: You will not be required to attend College. All tuition, support and assessment will be provided in the workplace, online and via email and telephone contact. You will be supported by one of the College’s work-based learning assessors and will be mentored by your employer/supervisor in the workplace.
Duration: 12-14 months
Start Date: You may start this programme at any time during the year.
Location: As this qualification is work-based no college attendance is required. Your tuition will be provided online, and you will be supported by a personal tutor who will assess your work and provide feedback. Regular contact and support will be carried out by your tutor via email, telephone and Microsoft Teams. Your place of work should be located within a 90 minute radius of our Huntingdon centre; if it is outside of this area, please contact us as we may still be able to meet your training needs.

Course Content

This qualification is also available as part of an apprenticeship

You will complete the following mandatory units:

  • Clean and Maintain Stables
  • Provide Feed and Water to Horses
  • Carry out Routine Care and Monitor the Health and Well-being of Horses
  • Restrain Horses Using Specified Methods
  • Monitoring and Maintaining Health and Safety
  • Maintain and Develop Personal Performance
  • Establish and Maintain Effective Working Relationships with Others

You will then choose from a range of optional units to complete the qualification, these will be discussed with you at induction, examples include:

  • Turn Out, Catch and Maintain Horses when Turned Out
  • Assist with the Care of Performance Horses after Strenuous Exercise
  • Fit, Remove and Maintain Tack for Exercise
  • Assist with the Rehabilitation of Horses
  • Clean and Groom Horses for Appearance

Assessment

You will complete a portfolio and pass work-based practical assessments.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is also available as part of an apprenticeship

There are no formal academic entry requirements. However you must be either employed (or volunteering) in a suitable horse care environment, such as a riding school, horse charity or racing yard, within a 90 minute radius of our Huntingdon centre. If your place of work is outside of this area, please contact us as we may still be able to meet your training needs.

 

Course Fees

Course fees can either be paid in full before the beginning of the course, on an annual basis, or via our ‘Pay As You Learn’ monthly payment scheme. A CAW Loans2Learn scheme is also available, details can be found below.

If you have not achieved your qualification by the planned end date detailed in your individual learning plan, you will be able to continue to receive support and access to your course by paying monthly direct debit payments until certification of your award.

The CAW Loans2Learn scheme is a personal loan that can help you to spread the cost of your course into manageable payments. What Next?

This qualification will demonstrate to employers your practical skills and abilities, this will stand you in good stead when applying for future job roles in the industry.

You may wish to study the Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Horse Care and Management or the Senior Equine Groom (Level 3 Apprenticeship). To do this, you will need to be working in a supervisory/managerial role, if you have any concerns about whether your job role will allow you to do this, please speak to your work-based assessor or a member of our Customer Advice Team.
