Case Study: Craig Bailey RVN AVLM
“Veterinary nursing is a career full of heart, resilience, and lifelong learning!”
Craig Bailey RVN AVLM completed the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing in 2020. We caught up with Craig and asked him about his time on the course, his career since qualifying, and his advice for anyone considering a career in veterinary nursing.

Why did you choose to study veterinary nursing?
Growing up, I always had a deep-rooted love for animals, being very lucky to have found that love alongside my mum and her passion for animals, but I was equally drawn to veterinary nursing after being a “Saturday Boy” at the local practice looking after the husbandry of the patients and supporting the nursing team. Veterinary nursing seemed to combine both of these passions perfectly for me. I was particularly inspired by the dedication and compassion I witnessed in vets and vet nurses who cared for my own pets growing up, they left a lasting impression on me and made me want to follow in their footsteps.
What programme did you study with CAW and what was your experience like?
I studied the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing with CAW, and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I made.
The support from tutors was incredible. During my studies I sadly faced an incredibly sudden loss of my mum. Throughout that time my tutors and the centre support staff were very compassionate, supportive, and kept me on track with the structure of the course which gave me a strong foundation, both academically and practically as I progressed. Financially this was also the best option for my circumstances as it gave me the opportunity to work in practice whilst attending college once per week.
I always say I’m a proud former student, CAW gave me the confidence and skills to grow within the profession and I’m still grateful for that to this day. Having completed my studies and been awarded “London’s Best Final year Student” at the graduation, it’s safe to say I’m beyond proud and happy to be a qualified veterinary nurse.
Can you tell us more about your career after qualifying?
After qualifying, I continued working in a busy 24-hour first opinion emergency hospital, which provided me with a solid foundation in handling a wide variety of cases. I then moved into referral nursing, joining Dick White Referrals as the Cardiothoracic Surgery Nurse. During my time at DWR, I had the opportunity of supporting Dr. Bristow in establishing the Open-Heart Surgery programme, which sparked my passion for advanced surgical and ECC nursing. I particularly enjoyed managing complex cases through surgery and their recovery, collaborating closely with the Theatre, ECC, and Cardiology teams.
In February 2024, I progressed into a leadership role, becoming the Nursing Manager at AURA Veterinary. Here, I lead an incredible team of nurses and veterinary care assistants, working together to deliver exceptional patient care and client support. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring and developing others, something I find deeply rewarding. Managing a large, multidisciplinary nursing team in a specialist referral setting has only strengthened my passion for leadership, inclusivity, and fostering career growth within the profession.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in your career so far?
It’s hard to choose just one. I’m incredibly proud of developing the skillset and knowledge to succeed as a cardiothoracic surgery nurse while coordinating the heart team at DWR, under the mentorship of Dr. Bristow. However, stepping into a leadership role at AURA Veterinary has been especially fulfilling. Being able to support and shape the culture of a team, while still maintaining clinical involvement and helping meet the operational needs of a growing business, has been a real privilege. I’m particularly proud of creating an environment where nurses feel heard, valued, and able to thrive, especially those who may not have always seen themselves reflected in leadership before.
What advice do you have for someone looking to do this career?
Be curious, stay kind and never underestimate your potential. Veterinary nursing is a career full of heart, resilience, and lifelong learning! Surround yourself with people who lift you up and don’t be afraid to carve your own path, there are so many directions this profession can take you.
