Case Study: Hollie Davy

Hollie Davy completed the Animal Care and Welfare Assistant Level 2 Apprenticeship (Veterinary Care Support pathway) from 2022-24. We caught up with Hollie and asked her about her time on the course, and her plans for the future.

I undertook the Level 2 Animal Care and Welfare Apprenticeship alongside my current full-time job in a vet practice; previously, I had attempted a veterinary nursing course at another college, but after finding it wasn’t for me, I chose to undertake a care assistant course many years later, as it meant I could still be involved with patients.

I chose The College of Animal Welfare because I could easily adapt it around my working life, and I had heard positive things about the college – being able to work at my own pace, with support always on hand, was very helpful. I enjoyed learning about animal behaviour and how to interpret and comfort animals in a veterinary setting, and I also enjoyed learning about anatomy, physiology, and diseases in greater detail. The parts of the course I found challenging were logging off-the-job hours, as sometimes it can be difficult to put time aside for this, and learning about anaesthetics, but my tutor was very supportive with these issues and helped me to overcome my difficulties.

I enjoy my job as a veterinary care assistant, and have no plans to move into nursing again, however I may wish to expand my knowledge to specific diseases, anatomy, or even horse care as I have been around them most of my life and would consider using this College again as I had a very positive experience.
