As nurses we play a momentous role in transfusion medicine and are often the key to fast and effective treatment, especially in an emergency. This presentation will provide an overview of transfusion medicine, including a recap of core principles and guidance on selecting appropriate blood products - including the use of less commonly used products such as intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG), human albumin, and platelet-rich concentrate. The session will also highlight potential complications as well as review common emergency presentations, and discuss approaches to triage, stabilise, and treat.
