Ofqual regulated qualifications
Dedicated learning support teamOverview
Our Functional Skills Maths courses at Level 1 and Level 2 are Ofqual regulated qualifications that are awarded by Training Qualifications UK (TQUK). They are designed to help you build the practical maths skills you need for everyday life, work, and further study.
Whether you’re returning to learning, looking to improve your confidence with numbers, or need a recognised qualification to progress in your career, these courses provide a flexible and supportive way to achieve your goals. Functional Skills qualifications focus on applying maths in real-life situations, helping you to solve problems, interpret data, and make informed decisions.
Choosing the right level
- Level 1 is ideal if you want to build confidence with core maths skills and develop a solid foundation.
- Level 2 is a more advanced qualification, often considered equivalent to a GCSE pass (grade 4/C), and is suitable if you already have a good understanding of basic maths and want to progress further.
If you’re unsure which level is right for you, don’t worry. Once you apply, you’ll have a pre-course discussion with a tutor, who will assess your current skills and recommend the most suitable level. This ensures you start at the right point and get the best chance of success.

What will you study?
Both level 1 and level 2 cover the same core areas, with level 2 requiring a higher level of understanding and more complex problem-solving.
The qualification is based around three key mathematical skills:
1. Representing
- Understanding practical problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts
- Identifying the information needed to solve them
- Selecting appropriate maths methods and organising your approach
2. Analysing
- Applying maths to solve real-life problems
- Using logical steps and checking your work for accuracy
3. Interpreting
- Explaining your results clearly
- Drawing conclusions from data and calculations
- Communicating solutions in a way that makes sense in real-world situations
These skills are designed to help you apply maths confidently in everyday life and the workplace, not just pass an exam.
Assessment
You will complete written assignments and an online examination.
You will be required to attend either our Huntingdon, Leeds or North London centres to complete the online examination (unless you choose to sit this via remote invigilation from home or work).
Start dates
Our online, distance learning courses can be started at any time. You will work through your online course materials at a time that is convenient to you and be supported by a personal tutor.
Entry requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements for this course.
Please note: As our courses include online learning components, students are required to have access to a PC or laptop with a reliable internet connection.
Fees and funding
£724
Awarding Body Fees - £16
If you choose to sit your examination remotely, there will be an additional fee of £30.
All students or employers are required to pay the awarding body fees in addition to the course fees. Please note that these are recharged at cost and may be subject to change.
CAW Loans2Learn
Course fees must be paid in full before the course begins. If you are unable to do so, we offer a personal loan scheme (Loans2Learn) that can help you to spread the cost into manageable monthly payments over a period of up to five years, subject to eligibility. It can be used to fully, or partially, cover your course fee (but does not cover any awarding body fees, such as enrolment and examination fees which are payable on top). More information can be found here.
The current rate of interest for a CAW Loans2Learn is 9%. Click on the calculator icon to calculate your monthly repayment options based on different repayment term lengths.
Example repayment - a Loans2Learn loan for the full course fee of £724 over 12 months would equate to monthly repayments of approximately £64 per month (please note this is an indicative price based on current fees and interest rates).
General Advice
Sources of financial help can be found on our student finance page. Before making any financial decision it is recommended that you seek advice from an independent source, for example the Money Advice Service.
If you have not achieved your qualification by the planned end date detailed in your individual learning plan, continued support and course access is available by paying monthly direct debit payments, or applying for a supplementary or increased loan, until certification is achieved.
These are current figures and may be subject to change. The differences in course fees reflect the level of funding that is available as a result of government policies and priorities. These may be as a result of age, employment status, previous education achievements, or location for example, and are outside the control of The College of Animal Welfare.
Your future
Achieving a Functional Skills Maths qualification at level 1 or level 2 can open up a range of opportunities, both personally and professionally.
You’ll develop practical maths skills that you can use every day—whether that’s managing your finances, understanding bills, budgeting, or making informed decisions at work and at home. Many learners find that as their maths improves, so does their confidence.
Progression opportunities
- Move into further education or training
A level 2 qualification is widely recognised as equivalent to a GCSE pass (grade 4/C) and is often a requirement for college courses, apprenticeships, and vocational training. - Improve your career prospects
Many employers look for a solid level of maths as a basic requirement. Gaining this qualification can help you apply for new roles, take on more responsibility, or progress within your current job.
