Suzanne’s Journey from the NHS to Professional Dog Grooming

From student to professional groomer, Suzanne Sheldon has turned her love for animals into a rewarding new career. We recently caught up with our former dog grooming student to hear about her journey, her experiences on our dog grooming courses, and her career since completing her training…

Why did you choose to become a dog groomer?

I became a dog groomer because I have always loved working with animals and wanted a career where I could make a positive difference in their lives. Becoming a dog groomer allowed me to combine my passion and creativity in a hands-on, rewarding profession. I decided I needed a career change after working for the NHS for 25 years.

Why did you choose to study at The College of Animal Welfare and which parts of the course did you like the most?

The College of Animal Welfare (CAW) had a college situated in my local town. [I enjoyed] learning the different grooms, and the hands on practical days I mainly enjoyed. I also did enjoy learning about parasites and the first aid modules.

Can you tell us about your journey since leaving college?

Since leaving college, I started to rent a table part time to build my clients, alongside continuing to work at the NHS. I started to take my education further by attending seminars and the CAW Congress day. Along with that, I started to compete in different classes for feedback .

I’ve been nominated for the Liz Paul Award in 2024 for Creative Stylist. Then I was nominated and won Groomphoria Creative & Diversity Stylist of the Year 2025. Now this year I’ve been nominated again for a Liz Paul Award Creative Stylist and also Beginners. I left the NHS over a year ago and now I rent a little shop 5 minutes walk from my house and work full time as a groomer. I can’t sometimes believe how things have changed.

Can you tell us what your plans are for the future?

I’m looking to help groomers and students in the Asian and creative side of grooming, along with continuing to compete in the UK and maybe overseas.

What advice do you have for someone looking to become a dog groomer?

Do it! You can only try to see if it’s for you. It is a physical job but a rewarding job. And keep studying and learning!
