With growing awareness of climate change and the importance of protecting our environment, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration across many industries. From reducing waste and conserving resources to adopting more environmentally friendly practices, businesses and individuals all have a role to play in creating a more sustainable future.
Green Careers Week is an opportunity to explore how different careers can contribute to protecting the planet, raise awareness of green skills and encourage people to consider the environmental impact of their career choices.
What is a Green Career?
When you think of a green career, jobs in wildlife conservation, renewable energy or environmental science might be the first that come to mind. However, green careers aren’t limited to roles that focus directly on protecting the environment.
A green career can involve any role that contributes to environmental sustainability, whether that’s through reducing pollution, improving energy efficiency, protecting natural resources or helping organisations adopt more sustainable ways of working.
For example, an environmental consultant might help businesses reduce their environmental impact, while an accountant could support an organisation in monitoring sustainability-related costs. Similarly, someone working in animal care might help reduce waste and encourage more environmentally responsible practices in their workplace.
This means there are opportunities to make a difference across a wide range of industries, even in careers that aren’t traditionally considered ‘green’.
Why are green skills important?
As the UK works towards its target of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, sustainability is becoming increasingly relevant to the workplace.
Green skills are the knowledge and abilities that help individuals contribute to a more environmentally sustainable society. These can include environmental awareness, problem-solving, resource management and the ability to identify more sustainable ways of working.
Developing these skills can help prepare individuals for changing workplace expectations and support businesses in reducing their environmental impact.
How can you make your career more sustainable?
You don’t necessarily need to work in an environmental role to make a positive contribution to sustainability. Small changes in everyday working practices can make a difference, particularly when adopted across an entire organisation.
For example, you could look for opportunities to reduce unnecessary waste, use energy and resources more efficiently, minimise paper consumption or encourage recycling in your workplace.
You could also learn more about the environmental challenges facing your industry and explore how employers are responding to them.
