Millie Belfield studied the Level 2 Veterinary Care Support Apprenticeship with us. We caught up with Millie and asked her about her journey to becoming a VCA, her time on the course, and her plans for the future.
My name is Millie and I began studying with CAW in April 2025 where I stepped into my role as an apprentice Veterinary Care Assistant at a busy practice in Stafford. I chose this career pathway as I knew it was a career I could travel the world with as every country has a vet clinic and poorly patients that need TLC!
I found the course very in depth, especially in anatomy and physiology. This gave me a major boost of confidence when working with my patients and colleagues! Anatomy was challenging, however with the help of my fantastic clinical coach, I managed to pass my course with Distinction in all areas!
Since completing my course, I was offered a role at a mixed animal practice in New Zealand where I now work alongside a great team with colleagues from all over the world!
My plans for the future are to continue my career in veterinary care and work all over the world, not only changing the lives of many patients but meeting new people and experiencing new cultures!
My advice for anyone wanting to go into a veterinary nursing assistant role would to be jump in feet first, volunteer at local practices and just get as much experience as you can before starting work full time! And the best tip of all, love your patients as if they were your own! Remember you have the potential to make the biggest difference to their hospital experience. Make sure you wake up in the morning excited to go to work!
